Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an grave risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with Europe starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
