RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
