Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried celebrity crewmates.
The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that passed the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
