A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
